A Magical Day
A Love Story

Now Katie and Davey were fast friends. They did everything together. Why that summer Davey spent more time either with Katie and Bruzzie or just Katie alone. Why you could say that Katie and Davey were little lovers that summer, don't you know? You see Katie and Davey would play all day long and do many fun things together. One of the things they especially liked, mainly for the reason that it contained at least to them a great element of risk and also an element of competition, was catching Honey Bees in jars off of the dandelion flowers in the front yard of the Telephone Company building.
They would do this all day long sometimes and one time the bee got out of the jar and Katie stepped on it and it stung her. Davey immediately went over to Katie who was crying and held her and rubbed her foot and made sure the stinger was out. He then walked her to his house that was right across the street from the Telephone
Building where his mother put some baking soda and a little ice on her foot and soon she was all right.
Now one day Davey got the gang together and Katie and Davey decided to have them all play a trick on the "mean lady" that lived up the hill. They didn't know why they thought she was a mean lady, they just did. Well, anyway Davey said, "everyone hide in the bushes and Bruzzie you go up and knock on the door and the run back and hide." Bruzzie did as told as he always did and the little old lady came to the door and said, "Who is it?" After she said this a couple of times she went back in and they all laughed! They did this several times and by the time it was Davey’s turn she was on to them and jumped out of the house and grabbed Davey!
"Lady, Lady, don't hurt me," he cried. She let him go and calmly said "children would you like some apples?" Of course they said yes. That was the start of a friendship that lasted until Davey moved away from Baden, PA a few years later.
The three kids started playing in her yard and Katie and Bruzzie and Davey would catch bees and one time Bruzzie got stung by a bee and the Little Old Lady as they affectionately called her now, fixed him up much like Davey’s mom had fixed up Katie.
One more fun thing that Katie and Davey did many days when the telephone men were in a good mood was go in the switching house and run around and listen to all the clicking of the telephone switches. Why one day one of the head guys let them tap directly into the phone line and call their moms at home. Even if they didn't know
their number, if they knew their street address or their last name they could ring their house and their moms.
So Katie and Davey had a wonderful summer, but seeming "tragedy" struck the last week of summer. Katie's parents decided to move on short notice and Davey and Katie were devastated. On the last day they went first to the Little Old Ladies' house and while they all cried, Katie said goodbye and the Little Old Lady told Katie she could come back and visit any time and The Little Old Lady gave each of them an apple.
Now it was off to their favorite spot, the field in front of the Telephone Building. Davey picked some dandelions and put some in a jar and some he gave to Katie. Then he caught a bee and put it in the jar and gave it to Katie. They both started cryin and kissin and kissin and cryin and huggin and cryin until Katie dropped the jar and the Honey Bee escaped and a great mighty rushing wind came upon the two of them. Miraculously and metamorphically in a blink of an eye Katie and Davey were transformed into Honey Bees and swept into the jar and the lid was sealed fast.
Just then, Bruzzie came along and saw what had happened and he knew it was the work of Cupid so he picked up the jar and took it home. Now later that evening Katie and Davey's mothers came looking for them. When they did not find them they were distraught and even called the police and the fire department. Even their fathers came and looked and their brothers and sisters, also.
After many hours of searching with tears in everyone's eyes they called off the search and that is the mystery of Baden that they speak of until this day. However, Bruzzie knew the secret and he fed the Katie and Davey bees until his wedding day many, many years later and in a far, far away land.
Bruzzie remembered his magical pet bees but had almost forgot that they were really Katie and Davey bees but, even so, he decided it was time to let his friends out of the jar. Low and behold when he opened the lid this time another mighty rushing wind blew Katie and Davey out of the jar and they were transformed into adult human beings and instead of just Bruzzie and Suzie getting married that day, Katie and Davey were married, too and they all lived happily ever after.
